I’m of two minds on this one. On the one hand, I’m not entirely convinced they do nothing, since so many of my favorite sauce and stew recipes include them, so I always sorta assumed that they have some magical flavor-releasing powers I don’t fully understand.
On the other hand, all those recipes clearly state how you have to be sure and remove every last trace of the things before serving because OMG THEY CAN KILL YOU AND PUNCTURE YOUR LUNGS AND YOU WILL BE DEAD.
So yeah, it’s a mystery.
